Youth Camp Project

Going through all the activities while the others were away to Bali, was truly memorable. Having the access to reach out Indonesia ‘berkebun’, visiting trash mountain and bus trip around Jakarta is a privilege to widen our experience in participating such educating programmes. Not only we are learning something new, but also we realized that we grew spiritually and becoming a better servant of God.
Indonesia berkebun
Indonesia berkebun was our first activity which involved us becoming more familiar with nature. We learn different types of planting, suitable condition and the surroundings. It was very fresh and we were greeted by friendly workers who are in charge of caring the plants. Not only we learned new ways on planting plants, we also realized something that most of the people didn’t see. It’s their motive of building a strong organization called Indonesia berkebun. They purely want to introduce people with new way of planting without needing to have wide area of space. It sounds simple, but it’s hard to do due to the fact that Jakarta people are mostly busy with their own activities causing this act of raising awareness won’t be easy. What we realize is how the workers are very committed to their work such as willing to deal with insects and unhygienic condition just for the sake of raising awareness.
There is a similarity between them committed to their work and us committed to Jesus. We should be willing to give everything we have to glorify his name since everything that we have came from him. Every sort of temptation not to commit to Jesus such as laziness, busy, etc should be avoided, the same as how those workers refused to quit despite the unfavorable things that they need to deal with every single day.
Bus tour
The next activity that we did was bus tour around Jakarta. It was undeniably the funnest activity since we had the chance to use the public bus for the first time. We used flazz cards for paying in order to travel with bus, something that we found modern. We started the journey from early in the morning to avoid traffic. Once we arrived there, we were honestly clueless about the route where should we take, luckily Mr.Hadi guided us where to go so that we won’t get lost. The first impression of transjakarta bus was simply convenient. Maybe it was early in the morning, so most of the seats were empty allowing us to sit comfortably. We didn’t just arrive to our destination, instead we still need to walk around while discussing which path to follow. . Process of discussion went easy for us despite we have different opinions. Each of the places that we visited, we took a photo of it as a sign of our memory and solidarity. It was surely tiring especially the walk and the hot weather, but at the end of the day what matter the most is the time we spent together.
Through this activity, we actually know who we really are. The walk and confusion we went through from today’s activity can be a representation of our own effort trying to be a better servant of Jesus. Despite we were worn out throughout the activity, we didn’t give up and continue with the activity, similarly to how we should act as Jesus’s servant. Strong, relentless and full of commitment are needed to be the servant of God, however
we realize that we are full of flaws but once again this simple activity reminded us to keep on going despite temptations to drive us away from God.
Trash Mountain
Our third activity was going to the trash mountain. It was a long ride from Springfield School as it was located on the southernmost of Bekasi (Bantar Gebang). We spent most of our time in the bus hearing music and having fun. As we arrived there, it wasn’t a place that we’ve ever thought. There were trash lying around on the ground of a giant mountain of trash that can be seen on the horizon. As we stepped outside, the smell was undeniably unpleasant and pungent ; some of our friends tend to become nauseous as well. As we walked towards the school itself, which is the most hygienic out of the four school buildings, we tend to step carefully and avoid trash that were dumped nearly everywhere. It gave an atmosphere that we can’t actually think what our lives would be if we were borned and raised there. As we arrived on the main school building, there were around 30 children that seemed excited upon our arrival despite being late due to the traffic. Not only bringing ourselves to the trash mountain, but we also brought souvenirs and food for lunch to be shared among everyone. Some children were happy, while some cried as for most probably feeling of shock. We sang two praise and worship songs dedicated for them and played several games such as “DoMiKaDo as well as coloring”. The children were enthusiastic and energetic, especially by the time we hand them parcels. We had lunch with the person who actually built that school for those kids and he gave us an inspirational talk. Finishing the day, we walked towards the trash mountain itself as we catch our bus to head back to school.
From the activity that we had, we observed how happy they are when we arrived there. From the simple activities that we played with them, they seemed so happy and grateful as of they have never experienced this sort of activity. Not only that, we can see how excited they are when receiving food and even some of them ‘fought’ in a friendly manner just to get their portion. We also salute them how they can cope and live in such a place where we the older ones refused to live at. What we can learn that we should be thankful for everything that was given to us, although sometimes it’s not based on our wants. We still tend to complain whenever we have homework, tests, etc meanwhile their only source of education is the school located near trash mountain with limited access of knowledge due to the limited amount of teachers.
Speaking about growth, we learned the definition of serving others. God always help people who are in difficulty, so in order to have spiritual growth and be a better servant, we should serve others who lacks necessities and at least be there for them to support financially or mentally. Through this visit to trash mountain, we know how does it feel to support those who are in need, and honestly looking at them feeling happy from our simple gift and help, it makes us feel honored and understand that we as the children of God should help each other.
